Cycle challenge through the heart of the East Midlands for fun and charity
The Pork Pie Pedal
The Pork Pie Pedal - a charity cycle challenge through the heart of the East Midlands
countryside - is being organised for the ninth year. The main route picks out a quiet
path from Melton Mowbray to Rutland Water, around the reservoir and back to Melton
Mowbray; approximately 50 miles of peaceful countryside to enjoy.
In 2015 we introduced an optional extra loop that will allow cyclists to complete
the original 50 mile route or increase the challenge to 60 or 70 miles. We are able
to offer a challenge that is suitable for all standards of rider; from cycle club
members who whizz along at incredible speeds, to people who will see this as a big
The Pork Pie Pedal is not a race. People will find success in different things based
on their experience. Our philosophy has been to encourage people to get back on their
bikes, enjoy some exercise in our beautiful countryside and have fun whilst raising
money for good charities. A number of the cyclists who have taken part have done
so after many years away from their bikes. We are proud that most of them have continued
to enjoy cycling.
Essentially the main route is in three stages; 17 miles out to Rutland Water, 17
miles around the reservoir then 17 miles back. We feel really fortunate that local
businesses and individuals have chosen to support us by providing refreshments for
our participants in the past and we hope to arrange similar sponsorship for 2016.
Squash and flapjacks are available when we arrive at Rutland Water and the reward
for getting around the reservoir is a lunch, sponsored by a range of local businesses.
The end of the cycle is rewarded with tea and home made cakes.
Participant numbers are limited to about 175 for 2017 so early registration is important.
